What is Trenchless Sewer Pipe Repair?

Historically, repairing underground pipes involved extensive days or weeks-long excavations and disruptive digging, damaging your landscaping, sidewalks, and driveways. However, with trenchless pipe repairs, you can solve sewage line issues with significantly less mess and disruption. This innovative method involves inserting a new pipe inside the damaged pipe, making the repair process more efficient and reducing the impact on your property.

How Trenchless Pipe Repair Works

At Ben’s Plumbing, we specialize in structural pipe lining or cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP). This type of trenchless repair uses a liner coated in epoxy inserted inside the damaged pipe to repair any leaks or cracks. Once called for a sewer problem, our experienced technicians will thoroughly inspect the site and use a camera to determine if trenchless repair is an option for your property. We may use hydrojetting, snaking, or another method to clean out the line for better visibility. This initial assessment also gives us an idea of the causes, location, and materials for your unique sewer line issue.

If trenchless is the optimal solution for your sewer repair, a trenchless replacement specialist will order a custom-measured epoxy-coated fabric liner specific to your property repair. We will create a small access point and feed the custom liner into your existing pipeline. Once in place, it will be inflated with water or air to contour to your pipe. The new liner will be cured using steam or UV lighting to ensure it reaches full strength. Once cured, the brand-new, seamless, and durable pipe is ready for use.

With Ben’s Plumbing trenchless solutions, you can enjoy a hassle-free sewer repair experience, with minimal disruption to your property and maximum effectiveness.

Trenchless Technology Uses

Trenchless technology was first implemented back in the 1970s by agricultural engineer Eric Wood. Since then, this modern method of replacing damaged pipes has revolutionized the plumbing industry. Trenchless repair services can be used on most water and sewer lines. The epoxy pipe liners can be sized to various pipe diameters and can repair materials like clay, lead, cast iron, or PVC piping.

Additionally, trenchless technology can repair a variety of issues:

Pipeline cracks and breaks
Tree root damage
Corrosion or rust damage
Weather damage like expansion or cracks from freezing

Additional Benefits of Trenchless Pipe Repair

There are quite a few benefits of using trenchless sewer drain repair in Seattle.

Less Disruption: the first (and biggest) benefit of trenchless pipe repair is the minimal property damage. With trenchless technology, we only need a small access point and can do it all without unnecessary excavation and disruption.
Faster: the first thing you want when you have a sewage line issue is to get back to normal–quickly! Depending upon the complexity of the repair, Ben’s Plumbing trenchless repair experts can typically complete repairs faster than traditional excavation.
Cost-Effectiveness: this speed can also mean savings. Without the need to restore your landscaping or driveway, trenchless pipe repair costs can be more economical than traditional excavation.
Less Soil Erosion: trenchless technology is also more environmentally friendly. Without the need for heavy machinery, disrupting soil, and disposing of used pipes, trenchless technology reduces environmental impact.
Durable: if all of these reasons aren’t enough, Seattle residents can be confident that trenchless repair work offers a long-lasting solution. Our epoxy pipe liner can last up to 50 years or more. This is the same expectancy as newly installed sewer pipes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does trenchless sewer line replacement work?

Trenchless sewer repair services involve using your existing pipes and inserting a pipe liner to repair any cracks, damage, or other issues. It is minimally invasive as it does not require extensive machinery or digging to repair your plumbing system.

Is pipe relining worth it?

Without the need to repair your landscaping, the cost of trenchless sewer line repair is significantly less than traditional open excavation methods. Pipe relining offers a durable solution without the expense and inconvenience of digging up (and replanting) your yard. By using your existing pipe system and lining it with new materials, you will have a sewer line that lasts between 35-50 years.

Can a sewer line be sleeved?

In many cases, the answer is yes. Sleeving a drain pipe can repair cracked or damaged pipes without having to dig up and fully replace your sewer line. Pipe lining can significantly reduce the amount of time and property destruction to repair a damaged line. However, not all lines can be relined.

Pipe relining is not as effective at repairing pipes with severe offsets from differential settling. Additionally, if your sewer line is already at full capacity or is undersized, relining is not the right solution.

Our expert team will evaluate your problem and determine if trenchless sewer pipe lining is right for you. With more than 25 years of experience, we can recommend the right solution for your sewer damage.

How long does epoxy pipe lining last?

Epoxy pipe lining is designed to provide lasting protection for your pipes, typically lasting between 35 to 50 years. Epoxy-lined pipes also provide an effective defense against external intrusions, such as tree roots, while also keeping the interior of your pipes clear of leaks, damage, and potential clogging issues. You can be confident your investment in epoxy pipe lining with Ben’s Plumbing will ensure long-term durability and reliability.

How do you reline a sewer line?

Pipe lining essentially fixes your pipes from the inside. It involves inserting a durable liner coated with epoxy resin into the existing line. This liner adheres to the inside of the sewer pipe, creating a seamless, long-lasting repair. The steps are pretty straightforward.

  • First, we state of the art technology to thoroughly investigate your line.
  • Then clean it with high-pressure hydro jetting or another method.
  • We then insert the new liner inside your old line.
  • Our specialists then shape the new liner to conform to the pipe.
  • Once cured, the seamless, highly durable pipe is water tight and long-lasting.

As an owner of a 100+ year old house, I'm well acquainted with plumbers. Ben Foster is the best. Great communication from his office, and he offered to come over the same day when I called because my description of the problem made it sound like an emergency (it wasn't). He showed up at the agreed upon time, and efficiently handled the faucet repair. He also let me know that the original sink stopper mechanism (my term, not his) was much higher value that the replacement I had purchased, recommended I retain it, and told me he would make the original work. Ben is friendly and professional and was a joy to work with.

We've used Ben's Plumbing for the last ten years or so. Some times it's been for planned work as part of a remodel and several times they've been for emergencies like a burst water tank. Each interaction has been very positive - good communication, thorough follow-through, personal service, and trustworthy. It's great to have a local company that's been so responsive and reliable over the years. (Including this morning's unexpected call for help!) Thank you!

We had a water main leak that may have resulted from work done on a neighbors property. Their contractor said he would bring a plumber in to fix it, but the "plumber" turned out to be the contractor, and he had no idea what he was doing; he started the job, and then quit after we found that he double-billed us for materials. Another plumber quoted an astronomical price, and couldn't get to it for two weeks. Two more never called back. Two guys from Ben's/HD Partners showed up the next day, and knew exactly what needed to be done. They got parts from their shop, and 1-1/2 hours later the pipe was replaced with solid fittings, both deep holes filled in, and the sidewalk dirt hosed down, for about 1/4 of what the other plumber quoted. Very competent and professional...worked fast and got the job done quickly at a fair price. I've heard of a few contractors doing stellar work for new customers to get great reviews, and then gouging them later, so I'm hoping that this is a company that always does stellar work at a fair price. I'll be calling Ben's again, so we'll find out. ;-)

I hired Ben's to take care of the plumbing for two bathroom fluffs in our home - the first visit involved removing the old faucets and the second visit was to install new faucets and a (tricky) Kohler Reach toilet. I can't remember the first plumber's name, but Nick did the installs and they were both great to work with. Nick even hauled away our old toilets. With both encounters the experience was positive in every way - they were responsive, able to come out fairly quickly, professional, and cleaned-up well after they were done. Their pricing seemed reasonable, too. We'll definitely use them again.

These guys were just incredible. We had kind of a tricky issue with the plumbing under a toilet. We checked three other plumbers and got quotes ranging from $2700 - $4200. And that was just to cut a lead pipe, replace it with modern materials and mount the toilet on a new ring/grease fitting. All the bids included some strange tinker toy like plumbing routing to fix the problem. One plumber suggested that we cut a hole into a plaster wall to gain access to the pipes! Ben's plumbing came in at $1200 and that included a brand new toilet! No strange rerouting of the plumbing. Just an in place repair. The plumber, Nic Huse, was unbelievably competent and efficient. He told us what he intended to do and just...did it. In about 2.5 hours. No fuss, no muss. If I could give these guys six stars out of five, I would.

Prior to calling Ben, we had already tried a couple contractors on Thumbtack. Ben came over the same day I called and arrived on time. He found the issue and gave me options to fix it. He even offered to teach me how to do the work myself to save me money! Ben is an incredibly honest and knowledgeable professional. I would not hesitate to recommend him and will definitely call him the next time I have a problem.

"Really nice people, from the office to the field. Our engineer was super helpful and got the repair done quickly, including a trip to the hardware store to get the right part for our quirky old house. I’m bummed that we used a “name brand” service on our recent sewer project - wish I had know about"
